Jolie Holland and Samantha Parton

$150 advance

From the Promoter

Holland and Parton's class will focus on writing songs that proceed directly from the author's experience, whether the material is fictionalized or not. They’ll explore how musical form can be used to express situations and emotional states, and how to hone personal visions within songwriting. Participants will learn to hear their own inner songs.
Their workshop will be focused on songwriting techniques, with a peripheral but strong focus on performance. It’ll be 80/20% solo/group work.
Bring: a notebook and writing implements, and an instrument you like to compose with.

JOLIE HOLLAND AND SAMANTHA PARTON

Over a decade after co-founding The Be Good Tanyas, Jolie Holland and Samantha Parton have rekindled their musical partnership. Their unpretentious demeanour is underlined by the fact they call their duo by their names because they “didn’t have a good band name.” Their music follows that lead in getting to the point. Succinct, stirring lyrics nestle amongst layered melodies and lusciously intertwined harmonies, traveling through soil harrowed by roots, blues, jazz and even ragtime. While they occasionally step into tracks made by influences like Bob Dylan or Townes Van Zandt, their own songs cover the best ground.
