Every city needs its own Rebecca and Ryan Anderson.
Not only are they tireless supporters of Edmonton’s music scene, they craft their own songs as F&M, a baroque-pop outfit with a penchant for dark lyrics and mesmerizing melodies.
For more than 10 years, the couple have been indispensable stalwarts — attending as many gigs as they can, releasing six of their own albums and touring through Canada and Europe.
With their seventh and latest album, Lessons From Losers (fall 2018), F&M teach a master class in resiliency. At a time when music is more disposable than ever and careers seemingly last only a few years, the Andersons encourage kindred spirits to remain true to their artistry.
Rebecca contributes hauntingly pristine vocals, adventurous keyboard arrangements and emotional snapshots, while Ryan offers a soulful croon, sturdy guitar riffs and wryly astute lyrics. Their long-time multi-instrumentalist and producer Bryan Reichert adds subtle flourishes of guitar and strings. Lessons From Losers is the followup to 2014’s At Sunset We Sing, which was shortlisted for the Edmonton Music Prize and earned a Best Alternative Album nomination at the Edmonton Music Awards.
F&M’s forlorn cover of “Maybe Tomorrow” from TV’s The Littlest Hobo was featured in the modern hockey classic, GOON . Five of the band’s last six albums appeared on the Earshot charts — including 2010’s Sincerely, F&M (Shameless Records), which was N0.1 on the national folk charts for six weeks.
