From the Promoter

This show sees Burn Down The Capital and the Music Gallery team up once again, invading Double Double Land to bring Brooklyn-based avant-garde ambient vocalist Julianna Barwick to Toronto.

Influenced by her upbringing in church choirs & folk music, Barwick’s angelic vocal loops soar in a self-made ethereal landscape. Repeated lyrical passages weave through the gentle airiness of her drawn out notes like clouds floating through each other. Her compositions are wispy, changeable forms, additive by nature but without sacrificing spaciousness. Her most recent album, Nepenthe (Dead Oceans), came out last August. Since then she has toured Europe with Sigur Ros.

Vasillus is the moniker of Brooklyn-based musician, A. Bilal. Employing powerful vocals atop buzzing synths and drum machines, the end result is a melting pot of psychedelic soul and drone music.

Christine Duncan is one of Toronto’s most prominent improvising vocalists. Her five-octave voice is at ease in a variety of styles such as opera, R&B and jazz. She directs the community-based, improv-oriented Element Choir.

Castle If blends New Wave / Krautrock / Experimental / Electronic to evoke “feelings of warm insanity”
