From the Promoter

You’ve seen Karen Ng everywhere – onstage with Do Make Say Think, Bry Webb and Broken Social Scene, teaching at the Regent Park School of Music, and in her role curating and running Somewhere There events. and. Having appeared in last season’s Emergents series as a member of Clarinet Panic Deluxx, she jumped at the chance to apply her considerable programming skills to this evening’s concert.

Says Karen: “As I grow older and wiser, I am becoming increasingly fascinated by the genius of simplicity and the paradox that accompanies it. A single voice, or in another case a single voice with a unison accompaniment, make way for a wide spectrum of sonic results and it’s the patient journey towards these sounds that I love so much.”

Linsey Wellman opens with a solo saxophone set. Linsey is a creative and spontaneous improviser on the alto and soprano saxophones who has plied his trade with Sun Ra tribute Rakestar Arkestra, art-punk ensemble Fet Nat, the Craig Pedersen Quartet and calypso outfit Kobo Town. He is also co-founder and co-curator of the Improvising Musicians of Ottawa/Outaouais (IMOO) concert series. He releases a new solo recording in January 2016: Manifesto.

Composer, artist and musician Lisa Conway follows. She has composed for and collaborated with filmmakers, dancers, and performance artists, and has completed creative residencies from Sackville, New Brunswick to Aubagne, France. Lisa is currently a songwriter-in-residence at the Canadian Film Centre. Here she presents a song cycle for three voices entitled The Stars Alight, based on myths derived from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, incorporating both acoustic performance and live processing (via Max MSP and an XBox Kinect).

“Both artists have an incredible ability to create so much out of so little,” Karen continues, “and this ability along with how much they differ aesthetically is the reason why I’ve chosen to present them together.”
