This episode of the Nite brings us two performers exploring the boundaries of sound they can create from their voices, "weirding weapons" and feedback experiments.
Moon McMullen 10pm
Moon McMullen is the alter ego of Justin Adam. Mixing and mashing found sounds, live performances, vox contributions from family members and outer realm frequencies into beat driven retro future explorations. Originally captivated by music, listening to early 80s Detroit radio late at night and since by Peter Gabriel, AFX and J Dilla - Moon retrofits old boom boxes, using microphones and drum machines, creating feedback and buzz harmonies. Performance aspect is key as this 6’4” ex pro-ball player is known to show up in a full body gold suit! Moon McMullen, is actually Justin’s grandfather - James Anderson McMullen — they were best friends until he died when Justin was 13. They used to call him ’Moon’ after the cartoon character Moon Mullen, ironically Moon Mullen was also a baseball player, Justin’s first profession. He would collect garbage turned it into machines. Xuan Ye 9pm
Xuan Ye (also known as APA) is a Toronto-based Chinese artist and performer whose body of work synthesizes music, performing and visual arts between which the boundaries are ever-blurring.
As her definition of (soma/sound) experiences morphs to suit multifarious situations and concepts, Xuan is techne agnostic in sculpting performances where object sounds, sound improvises, body transmutes, and space resonates — the manifested indeterminacy is a result of never-recurring formality. On top of “microphone agitations”, she is recognized for her visceral growls and howls, and nuanced cacophony channelled through voice which is described as “a weirding weapon” that produces “blasted shout-blues frozen on the one, in the pure now”.
Xuan also composes for recording, installation and film, apart from stage appearances. Her works have been performed and exhibited in North America, Europe and China, most recently at the New Museum (US), Electric Eclectics Festival (CA), and Christof Migone's Mixer at the 21C Music Festival (in partnership with MOCCA).
