WELCOME TO THE 2018 CONCERT SEASON AT CBC'S GLENN GOULD STUDIO! On the first Thursday of every month - January through June - we present the WRITE OFF THE KEYBOARD Series, in partnership with Steinway Piano Gallery Toronto.

Thursday, March 1st at 5:30 pm: Few composers have sought perfection in sound architecture as Ludwig van Beethoven did. Instead of spontaneous creativity and improvisation, he would almost always chisel away at musical ideas, carefully crafting the perfect motif or structural material. Bagatelles were something Beethoven wrote throughout his life - in each of his three stylistic periods. The late set of six, Op. 126, peer forward in time, to a place where romantic individualism reigns and quiet, personal reflection is the expressive modern standard.

This performance also features Jean Sibelius' haunting northern cycle, "Kyllikki," and is followed by a launch party for Adam Sherkin's new Vinyl EP, Soliloquy (Centrediscs). Soliloquy delivers a snapshot of the Canadian piano miniature. This new release reflects the intimate and the contemporary through sound worlds unique to Canada. All five tracks presented are world premiere recordings: an early prelude by distinguished Canadian Jacques Hetu, a neoclassical invention abuzz with North American counterpoint by Colin McPhee and Sherkin's own set of Meditations, Book II. These offer affectionate musical dedications: 1) Midsummer Ballad, gifted to a childhood friend on her wedding day; 2) Soliloquy, written for a close friend's thirtieth birthday; and finally, 3) Scotch & Happiness, a piece inspired by verses containing irrepressible doses of life advice.
