Bernice, led by Robin Dann, blends "melodies reminiscent of artists like Sade with the playful sounds of artists like Deerhoof and Dirty Projectors" (Pigeons & Planes). Dann is a trained vocalist and her band - Thom Gill, Felicity Williams, Philippe Melanson and Dan Fortin - spend most of their time playing and touring with projects of all stripes. Following the release of two singles - "St Lucia and "Don't want to be European" - Bernice toured extensively supporting Martha Wainwright and released Puff, a 5-song EP on June 16th, 2017 to resounding critical acclaim from Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum, The Fader and Zane Lowe. Puff was produced by Grammy Award winner Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Lucius) and Matt Smith (Owen Pallett).
“As “future-minded” music slogs along with its flighty, speculative agenda, Erica Eso places it distinctly within the human heart...an optimism that drives the creative will into the “unknown-known” of human closeness, like a warm human touch radiating with robotic energy. Such hybrid sentimentality is much needed, but it comes packaged alongside potentially subversive art-tactics. Yes, the group’s optimism reaches outward, but it’s decoy-persona of accessibility gives way to guitar-squall and mystery. The track’s willful submission to a sturdy pop format is coupled with genuine peculiarity — a compassionate experimentalism anticipating dystopia, without being turned cold by it.” - Tiny Mix Tapes
