CHARLES GAYLE (charlesgayle.bandcamp.com/releases)
allmusic.com/artist/charles-gayle-mn0...

Charles Gayle grows in the same arboretum as free jazz pioneers Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, Pharoah Saunders and Archie Shepp. Gayle branches into incendiary urban American gospel, informed by the concrete environs. During extended periods of homelessness in New York City, he assumed the character of “Streets”. Streets serves as a recurrent humble tramp clown (Emmett Kelly/Charlie Chaplin) offering an ego free focus on the music rather than the man. Behind that role he need not say much. The tenor saxophone afforded an intensely spirited expression later evolving into piano and bass pursuits as available. Note that he also is an accomplished carillonneur willing to peal the music from inviting belfries. Vision Festival #19 Arts for Art bestowed their annual Lifetime Achievement Award on Charles in 2014. The program featured the artist in duo, quartet and conduction of an ad hoc 10 piece orchestra while playing piano.

TONE welcomes Charles Gayle to the intimate theatre and baby grand piano of Arrayspace. The finale concert will offer solo and trio settings along with Shuffle Demon’s Rhythm Section: George Koller- bass and Stich Wynston – drums.

WAYS (brodiewest.com/ways)
Saxophonist Brodie West (Eucalyptus) teams up with percussionist Evan Cartwright (Eucalyptus, Tasseomancy, Alex Lukashevsky, etc). In this thoughtful duo both West & Cartwright play with the rhythm, they pass notes back & forth in a playful yes cautious way. Their music is full of space, letting each note truly absorb into the air before veering from it. Saxophone phrases wander over sparse minimalist percussion. Like old friends playing an elongated game of chess their interactions are curt and full of intent. The bare minimum says the most.
