Salamate Gnawa is a group based in Montreal, led by Maâlem Rachid Salamate, which performs traditional gnawa music with origins in the Sahel empires, gradually evolving to the Maghreb and flourishing in Morocco by the sea of Essaouira. Maâlem Rashid Salamate was a student of Maâlem Hmida Boussou, a master of Gnawa music. With his magnificent voice, gliding over the strings of his guembri (a three-string traditional lute) and accompanied by musicians on traditional percussions, he celebrates this mystical form of North African music.
Salamate Gnawa reveals the sacred origins of these “ancestral blues in which the voices of ancestors resonate.”
