The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC presents Joshua Redman’s contemporary tribute to free jazz in Still Dreaming on November 13, 2018, at 8pm in the Chan Shun Concert Hall. The “supremely affable and flowing improviser” (New York Times) pays homage to his father, Dewey Redman, and the music of Old and New Dreams — a group comprised of former band members of Ornette Coleman, one of the founders of free jazz in the 1960s. The younger Redman brings his brilliant tenor saxophone to trumpeter Ron Miles, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Brian Blade, each of whom has their own personal connections to the original four-piece. Their collaboration takes inspiration from the limit-pushing abstractions of the experimental Old and New Dreams, infusing lyrical subversions with fresh direction.
